Mira

Hi, I’m Mira

Hi, my name is Mira and I was found in a terrible condition by the DASH Dogs team back in summer 2019.

I was hiding in a bush on the road to Sparti by the mountains when I was saved.

A kind man had spotted me and contacted DASH Dogs.

They found me terrified and emaciated with my nails growing into my pads and covered in ticks.

I was very weak, and I had this horrible rope tied around my neck – I must have belonged to somebody once!

Perhaps they abandoned me? Or maybe I escaped from being tied up?

I was so unwell; I really don’t remember what happened before my rescue.

I only know that if I had not been collected by DASH Dogs I would have almost certainly died in that bush, and my story would have come to a very sad and tragic end.

Luckily for me, I was saved and taken back to DASH Dogs for a vet assessment.

They suspected I had advanced and untreated leishmanaisis and the results were positive, confirming this.

Leishmanaisis is a Mediterranean disease caused by the bite of a sand fly and it makes you very unwell indeed.

Leishmanaisis is fatal if left untreated but with regular medication, if it isn’t too far gone or you are not too weak, recovery is possible.

It is a very long journey back to health though.

Many of the dogs here at DASH Dogs suffer with this disease – it is common in Greece – and lots have made full recoveries and even been stable enough to be adopted.

The recovery journey truly depends on the dog.

Slowly I’ve learnt to trust the people who saved me, and I am happy with my routine at the shelter.

I even have a few friends now!

I like to cool down by taking a dip in the big water buckets here – it’s so much fun!

Since my rescue my condition has gradually improved at an alarmingly slow rate.

I am still underweight (this is common for leish positive dogs) but I have put on significant weight since I was found.

I am stable but still quite poorly which unfortunately makes it difficult for me to be adopted, I need lots of care and attention at DASH Dogs to get me healthy.

By sponsoring life-long DASH Dogs residents like me, you will be helping feed and care for me and changing the lives of every dog that comes to DASH Dogs for help, love and shelter!
